About us
DR. MOOPEN’S FAMILY FOUNDATION
Founded by Dr. M. Azad Moopen, Founder and Chairman of Aster DM Healthcare, Dr. Moopen’s Family Foundation stands as a philanthropic institution dedicated to driving transformative social impact across Kerala. Established with a clear moral purpose, the foundation focuses on four core pillars: equitable education, accessible healthcare, rehabilitation of the differently-abled, and holistic community development. Over the years, it has evolved into a catalyst for measurable, community-level change designing programs that respond to local needs with precision and long-term vision.
The foundation’s strategy is anchored in a clear understanding of systemic barriers such as limited access to specialized care, socio-economic vulnerability, and the absence of structured community support systems. By creating targeted, data-driven interventions, the foundation ensures that individuals and families gain not only immediate assistance but also the capacity to influence and improve their own futures.
A significant area of impact is the rehabilitation and education of children with neurodevelopmental conditions including autism, cerebral palsy, and intellectual disabilities. Through its specialized schools, therapy services, and vocational training programs, the foundation provides individualized support that strengthens functional abilities, independence, and social integration. This multidisciplinary model ensures that each child receives purposeful, outcome-oriented care.
Alongside this, the foundation leads comprehensive village-empowerment initiatives designed to build resilient, self-sustaining rural communities. These initiatives deepen community participation, develop local leadership, and enhance economic opportunities. Programs in women’s empowerment, child development, mental health, employability, and expatriate support are structured to ensure that rural citizens are active contributors to their own progress not passive recipients of aid.
A defining principle guides every project: prioritize sustainable change over temporary relief. This means investing in capacity-building, strengthening local systems, and ensuring that interventions deliver measurable, generational impact. Whether in education, healthcare, livelihood development, or psychosocial support, every initiative is engineered for durability and community ownership.
Today, Dr. Moopen’s Family Foundation remains committed to its founding vision building a society where opportunity is not restricted by disability, geography, or economic status. With expanding programs across Kerala and a consistent focus on empowerment, the foundation continues to reshape what inclusive and equitable development can achieve.

Chairman's Message
Dr. M. Azad Moopen
Founder & Chairman
Though in existence for 2 decades, the momentum created by MILES has exponentially increased over last few years. This is due to the hard work of an ignited leadership team with support from the well-wishers, local bodies, politicians and bureaucrats. There have been several community empowerment programs like selfemployment and entrepreneurship for women, educational support to the academically weak students, career and job guidance for youth, healthcare schemes for the needy, scheme to support the Gulf Returnees to set up business etc. The Family Foundation also runs a school for special needs with a strength of 120 students. All these are done totally as a Not for Profit initiative with the funds coming from DMMF. Various agencies like Kudumbashri, NABARD, Norka etc are involved along with the active support of Tri level Panchayath. I take this opportunity to express sincere thanks to each and every one who were involved in this noble mission. With the new found enthusiasm through a very efficient core team.
I consider it a proud privilege and pleasure to share with our well-wishers and beneficiaries about the excellent achievements of Moopen Institute for Local Empowerment (MILES) over last 15 years. Started as a giving back initia-tive to our ancestral village Kalpakanchery by the Dr Moopen’s Family Foundation., MILEs has blossomed into a large organization with multifaceted activities. With the core mission for local development through educational and employment empowerment of the marginalized population, we are committed to bring positive changes in their lives, in the region.Along with the support from various sectors, I hope that MILES shall be able to extend its footprint beyond Kalpakancheri. When we started MILEs, the aim was to create a model for social empowerment in selected areas with Kalpakanchery as an incubator and spread it across the district first and then all over the state. Now that we have many excellent projects as models with clear operating plans, the next phase of MILEs have to be to extend the footprint. I request your wholehearted support, under the umbrella of MILES, to brighten the future of the marginalized and underprivileged sections of the society around us.
